The Legacy Centre Speaker Series with Dr. Jason Vranes

"Live to Serve" presented by Dr. Jason Vranes, Dean of Graduate Studies & Chief Advancement Officer, The Crown College

Live to Serve

What are you going to do for me?
How will you serve me?
What's in it for me?

Me, me, me... Everywhere you turn.
You can't escape it. Our culture thrives on it...
On Facebook and both sides of the political aisle.
From the mouths of employers and employees, husbands and wives, the best of friends.

It's enough to suck the life right out of everything you enjoy if you let it.

That's the thing about pride. It doesn't discriminate. All leaders struggle with status, ambition, and selfishness. That is nothing new. But we can make a conscious choice to live for a higher purpose.

So what if the world - or at least our corner of it - revolved around what we can do for others? What if we filled the remaining days of our lives at work and in our leadership roles trying to add value to others - making a habit of adding something to their lives rather than taking away? It's a countercultural response with no expectation of something in return.

Gary Chapman wrote, "If you want to breathe new life into your marriage, start serving your spouse." Same goes for your business. If you want to live the blessed life at work, start serving your employees and customers.

On Friday, March 6, Dr. Jason Vranes, Dean of Graduate Studies at The Crown College, will be speaking on the subject of servant leadership from a Biblical worldview in comparison to a secular one. According to Robert Greenleaf, widely known as the authority on servant leadership, “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” While this secular perspective sounds appealing, it has its shortfalls. Conversely, Dr. Vranes’ presentation will challenge us to focus on how community leaders can instill in others a true desire to serve others and the impact they can have by following Christ's example. We will learn our 'best test' for effectiveness and how serving others transforms why and how we work with people.

Yes, in today’s egocentric society, especially as business owners, it is so easy to become self-absorbed in our bubble of managing cash flow, second quarter goals, and human resource issues that never seem to get resolved. But how can we truly be the hands and feet of Christ if we keep our heads down in the mundane, day in and day out? It's no wonder we get burnt out, washed up, and just plain DONE!

We were meant for more. We were created to glorify God in our daily lives. For those who live to serve, one day, your Father will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." There is no better reward.
