Restored Hope Begins with $1.87

What will $1.87 buy you? Maybe an orange or two, a pint of milk if you are lucky, or possibly a can of vegetables on sale... The fact is it will not buy you a hot meal – not even a Happy Meal anymore. While the price of life has gone up, there is still hope being restored on the streets of Knoxville daily. You see happiness is not found in a box or a full cart of groceries anyway. Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) knows this.

Everyday, KARM serves 1,000 meals and is changing lives by meeting basic needs, building meaningful relationships, and sharing the love of Christ. For $1.87, they are able to provide a hot meal and much needed hope to the hurting and homeless people right here in our city.

Since coming to KARM, Raul said,
“I feel like I’ve found a new beginning to my life.”

We, at The Legacy Centre, want to continue to be part of the life changing work that is happening right here in our backyard, and we encourage you to partner with us and serve our neighbors this fall. Hope is being restored for $1.87. The many stories of KARM families finding shelter, children receiving an education and consistent meals, women escaping abusive relationships, men finding much needed work…it all begins with you and $1.87.

With more than 1,600 families expected to seek assistance this Thanksgiving, the need is great! Here are some ways that we are serving our neighbors this fall. Get involved and make a difference!

Pennies from Heaven: September - November

Pennies from HeavenA few weeks ago at the Speaker Series in September, we distributed Pennies from Heaven jars. We invite you to display a jar in your place of business (or at home) and collect pennies to help feed the hungry this Thanksgiving. It’s amazing how much spare change is lying around! Since a complete Thanksgiving meal is just $1.87, a jar full of coins can feed a whole table of hungry people who come to KARM this Thanksgiving. Imagine how many meals we could provide if our entire TLC community of businesses joined together in this!

If you have not already, please send your gifts with the form provided in your jar by November 16 at the latest. Be sure and send us a note (We would love to have a picture of your filled jar too!) and let us know how much you collect. Need more forms or savings jar labels? Click here

There is still time to start collecting! Come by our office and get a jar or call us and we will bring one to you!

Baskets of Hope: November 18

Baskets of HopeMore Thanksgiving baskets are needed! Baskets of Hope provides families in need with a complete Thanksgiving Dinner for up to six people. Get your entire business involved! We can make a lasting difference in someone’s life by reaching out to them when they are at their lowest point. All you have to do is fill a box!

Would you like to adopt a box?

Please let us know if you or your business would like to adopt a box ASAP (urgent need!) or you are welcome to partner with The Legacy Centre and help us fill a couple of boxes. When you contact us, just tell us how you would like to participate.

We will send you the commitment form (for a complete basket), additional details and instructions (grocery list, etc.) that you will need to know.

For your convenience, we will handle the commitments, pick-up of boxes, and delivery of completed baskets. We will have the sum of our committed boxes available for pick-up after October 22 (or we can deliver to your office). Completed baskets may be dropped off at The Legacy Centre office from November 8-15, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Also, TLC and KARM encourage you to pray for our neighbors in need and include inspirational notes or a devotional book in your box. Be creative and decorate the box! Please do not include any personal information (name/phone number/etc.) in the box.

Would you like to distribute baskets with us?

There are a several volunteer opportunities (ex. Turkey Trotter) available on the Baskets of Hope distribution day: Sunday, November 18, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. (volunteer commitment times vary). This is a great opportunity to meet and talk to the people you are serving. You will be touched by their stories and how God is using KARM to restore their lives. Send us a note about your interest in this. We will send you more details.

Thanksgiving Day: November 22

Thanksgiving mealThanksgiving is meant to be shared. Early Thanksgiving morning volunteers gather at KARM to prepare and serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings to some of the area's neediest. The meal is served to more than 500 guests from 11 am to 1 pm. Volunteers are invited to help decorate, cook, serve, and most importantly, just talk to their guests. Volunteer spots are limited.

On a day that is meant to be shared with family and friends, you can be a friend to someone you do not even know. What a blessing! Let us know if you would like to share in this special day of Thanksgiving.

Coats for the Cold: December 1

Coats for the ColdWe’re collecting coats – new or gently-used, all sizes - for KARM's annual Coats for the Cold drive! Prestige Cleaners will be cleaning all the coats. Please bring your coats to the Legacy Centre Office on Bearden Hill before November 16. Here is a flyer that you can print and display in your business: Click here

Here we come a caroling...
We also will be going over to KARM to volunteer and hand out coats on Saturday, December 1, 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon. In fact, we are putting a Christmas caroling team together that will gather to sing Christmas carols at the event from 8:30 -9:00 a.m. Sign up for the caroling team now.

How much hope can YOU give? It all starts with $1.87 and a willing heart. Let’s share some hope this Thanksgiving!
